Women live in poverty at consistently higher rates than men, and many of them are single parents of small children. The poverty rate for married couple families in 2010 in Washington state was only 4.6%.
For female-headed households, it was 29%, and with children under 18 years of age it rose to 36.6%. Single women raising children under five years old lived in poverty at an astonishing rate of 47.9%.
Note: Total number of people living in poverty in 2010 (in WA): 888,718
